After many adventures he landed in South Africa, to work in the diamond-rich fields of Kimberley.
Hard work and determination to succeed, combined with astute business management, made Joe Mylchreest one of the richest independent mine owners in the 1880s.
Upon the sale of his business interests to Cecil Rhodes, 'Diamond Joe' returned to the Island, where he became deeply concerned with all facets of Peel life, political, commercial and domestic.
