This may seem quite complicated, but is in fact quite easy. There are 2 areas to be configured, dialup networking and network.
a) Dialup Networking
1) On the Desktop choose My Computer
2) Select Dialup Networking
3) Select Make New Connection
4) Type in the name of the connection eg MCB.NET
The modem settings should be ok if you have installed the modem. If not you should do this first.
5)Click Next
6) Fill in:
a) Area Code - 01624
b) Telephone Number - 618038
c) Country Code - select UK
7) Click Next
8) Click Finish
Now you need to configure it.
9) Highlight the connection called MCB.NET and select File | Properties.
10) Uncheck use country code and area code
11) Check the other settings look ok and select Server Type
12) Type of Dialup Server should say:
PPP; Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet
13) Advanced options which should be checked are:
Enable software compression
14) Advanced Network Protocol options which should be checked are:
TCP/IP
15) Click TCP/IP Settings
16) Check Specify an IP Address and enter the users IP address ie 195.10.xxx.xxx
17) Check Specify name server address and enter
a) Primary DNS - 195.10.96.2
b) Secondary DNS - 194.72.6.52
18) Use IP Header compression and Use default gateway on router network should also be checked.
19) Select OK | OK | OK
Now the dialup networking should be ok. Now setup the network.
b) Networking
1) on the Desktop choose My Computer
2) Select Control Panel
3) Select Network
4) Make sure that TCP/IP is listed as a network component and if not add it by doing the following:
a) click Add
b) Select Protocol
c) Click Add
d) Select Microsoft for the manuafacturer
e) Select TCP/IP as the network Protocol
f) Select OK and follow any additional instructions.
5) Highlight TCP/IP and click Properties.
6) Press the IP Address Tab
a) Enable 'specify an IP Address and type in
I) Your IP Address
II) Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
7) Press then DNS Configuration Tab
a) Enable DNS and type in
I) Host = eg Fred
II) Domain = mcb.net
III) DNS Server Search Order
Primary DNS - 195.10.96.2
Secondary DNS - 194.72.6.52
8) Press the Gateway Configuration Tab
a) add the following Gateway, depending on your IP Address, 195.10.***.1 (Where *** can be found on the connection sheet)
9) Select OK | OK |
10) You should now be asked to restart your computer and you should do this now.
The first time you start up the connection, you should be presented with a screen containing blank entries for username and password (the telephone number should say 618038). Enter the value in HOST from you connection sheet for the username (all lowercase) and the value in Connection/POP3 Password for your password (this is case sensative). Click the save password box.
That should have sorted out all the configuration settings for Windows95, but if anything fails go back and check all these settings. Windows95 has a habit of disabling things like the Gateway and DNS settings in Network when you are not looking!
