Configuring WindowsNT for MCB.NET
WARNING: You MUST log in to your computer as an Administrator to complete the first two sections (Configuring the Network Control Panel and Setting Up Your Modem and Location Settings). You can log in as either an Administrator or a User to complete the remaining sections.
1. Turn your computer on. Start Windows NT if it does not start automatically.
2. Click the Start icon in the Taskbar. Point to Settings and click Control Panel.
3. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Network icon. If you see the message Windows NT Networking is not installed. Do you want to install it now?, click Yes.
a. In the Network Setup Wizard window, choose Remote Access to the network and click Next. Follow the instructions to install the adapter for your modem (you will need the driver diskette that came with your modem).
4. In the Network window, click the Protocols tab to bring it to the foreground.
a. Select TCP/IP Protocol and click Properties. In the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties window, click the DNS tab to bring it to the foreground.
1. Leave the Host Name field as it is. This field is not used for dial in.
2. Leave the Domain field as it is. This field is not used for dial in.
3. In the DNS Service Search Order list, click Add to enter the addresses for the two domain name servers (DNS) listed below. In the TCP/IP DNS Server window type the first address in the DNS Server list. Click Add. Repeat for the second address. Make sure they are in the order listed below.

194.72.6.524. In the Domain Suffix Search Order list, click Add to enter the names for the search domain listed below. In the TCP/IP Domain Suffix window type the first address in the Domain Suffix list.

5. Click OK to exit the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties window.
5. Click Close to exit the Network window. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
1. Turn your modem on.
2. Click the Start icon in the Taskbar. Point to Settings and click Control Panel.
3. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Modems icon. Make sure your modem is selected in the list. If the list is empty, click Add to install your modem. Follow the steps in the Install In the Control Panel window, New Modem Wizard window (you will need the driver diskette that came with your modem).
4. Click Dialing Properties to configure your location settings.
a. If you have not yet used your modem from your current location, click New, then click OK. (If you have used your modem, check that the settings are correct.) The words New Location will be highlighted in the I am dialing from field. Type a descriptive name for your location, such as home or office.
b. Enter the area code as 01624 and the country code to 44 (United Kingdom)
c. Choose Tone dialing. Click OK to close the Dialing Properties window.
5. Click Close to close the Modems Properties window.
1. Click Start in the Taskbar. Point to Programs, then Accessories, and click Dial-Up Networking.
If this is the first entry in the phonebook, click OK to create a new entry.
If this is not the first phonebook entry, click New in the Dial-Up Networking window.
2. The New Phonebook Entry Wizard window will open. In the Name the new phonebook entry field, enter the name MCB.NET. Click Next.
3. In the Server window check all three of the boxes. Click Next.
4. In the Phone Number window, make the following entry:
a. In the Phone number field, enter the phone number as 618038
b. Leave the Use Telephony dialing properties box unchecked. Click Next.
5. In the Serial Line Protocol window, choose Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and click Next.
6. In the Login Script window, choose None and click Next.
7. In the IP Address window, click Next.
8. In the Name Server Addresses window, click Next.
9. In the New Phonebook Entry Wizard window, click Finish.
Leave the Dial-Up Networking window open and proceed to the next section.
1. Turn your modem on. If the Dial-Up Networking window is not already open, click the Start icon in the Taskbar. Point to Programs, then Accessories, and click Dial-Up Networking.
2. In the Dial-Up Networking window, select the service you want to call from the Phonebook entry to dial drop-down list.
a. Make sure the location you configured earlier is selected under the Dialing from field. This selects the dialing prefix to use (click the Location button to change the dialing prefix).
b. The correct dialing prefix and phone number should now appear in the "Phone number preview" field. Click Dial.
3. In the Connect to window, make the following entries:
a. In the User name field, enter your hostname followed by @mcb.net. Use all lower case letters (be sure the Caps Lock key is off) with no spaces. Either of these can cause your authentication to fail. For example, if your hostname is freda, the entry would read:
freda@mcb.net
b. In the Password field, enter your password. Passwords are case sensitive, so be sure the Caps Lock key is off and you type it correctly.
c. Make sure the Domain field is empty (this field is used only for Windows NT domains).
d. Leave the Save password box unchecked. Click OK.
4. A Connect to status window will appear while your modem dials, establishes a connection, and verifies your user name and password. Once you have successfully connected, you will see a Connection Complete window. Click OK. The Dial-Up Networking Monitor icon (a tiny telephone handset) is located in the lower-right of the Taskbar next to the time clock.
You may now use Internet applications, such as e-mail, telnet, or a World Wide Web browser.
If your modem fails to dial or establish a connection, make sure it is turned on and the phone cord is firmly attached. Also check that your Caps Lock key is off (passwords are case sensitive) and that your user name and other information is correct following the instructions above.
1. Quit all the Internet applications you have open.
2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking Monitor icon (a tiny telephone handset) located in the lower-right of the Taskbar next to the time clock. Click Hang-up and Yes to confirm.
