NEWS FROM MT
Upgrade of ADSL to ADSL2+
I’m pleased to announce that with effect from the 11th January 2010 we will remove the charge to ISPs to upgrade customers to the ADSL2+ profile. Orders received up to close of business on 10th January 2010 will continue to attract a one-off upgrade fee of £40 ex VAT. This change is being made after discussion with the Director of the Communications Commission and is in response to the view that the current upgrade charge acts as a barrier to customers switching to ADSL2+. We expect this change, if passed on to the end user, could generate a large number of upgrade orders which may lead to a temporary increase in lead time. I will communicate any adjustments to this timeframe when demand is better known. Could I also ask that you stress to your customers that a compatible ADSL2+ router is required? Providing an ADSL2+ profile to a customer with only an ADSL1 device will at best, deliver lower speeds than advertised and at worst create line instability and drop-outs.
Non-Interleaving Profile reminder
As previously communicated via letter in August we will be introducing a non-Interleaving profile from 1st December 2009. This will appear as an option on Customer Requirement Forms which will be circulated towards the end of November. It remains the responsibility of the ISP to explain advantages and disadvantages of interleaved and non-interleaved profiles to their customers.
Impulse Noise Protection Setting
In the letter distributed in August we spoke of our intention to change the network Impulse Noise Protection (INP) setting from 2 to 1 as issues had been reported with some older ADSL2+ router models. We initially viewed the change of the INP setting as a way of resolving these problems. However further discussion with our network supplier has re-iterated the view that the current setting is a preferable setting for optimal customer experience.
We have had little feedback on the proposed INP change and what there has been has been mixed. We are therefore delaying a decision on universally changing the INP setting until further specific feedback is received and testing carried out.
